The Sculptor - Barry Baldwin
Within a career spanning over half a century Barry Baldwin has created innumerable Carved Sculptural works that adorn many prestigious public buildings both in the UK and Europe.
His work can be seen for example on Grand Buildings in Trafalgar Square London. Other works in London are located on Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace. Many carvings appeared over the years in the Provinces of the UK. On Churches, Public Buildings, Castles and Stately Homes.Cardiff Castle and Berkeley Castle to name so few among so many.
The Levantehaus in Hamburg, Germany houses a series of his works including the Centaur figure at the main entrance and Endangered species in rotunda.
Also, has used his incredible knowledge of the human form to produce a unique body of figurative works.
"It is what I am charged to do in my world of sculpture, creating a sense of order out of chaos. It was the little boy that realized that the so called 'real world' had a tendency to do the opposite."
'There are those of us who in our daily lives attempt to make our world a brighter, more interesting, safer, more cultured and refined place to be. It is why I have always believed in the importance of the role of art in all its forms and why I continue to use my time and energy to service 'the gift.'
"It is not just about carving stone. It is about the ability to train your vision to manipulate in three dimensions. I have no doubt that the process facilitates you to be far more proficient in other mediums and ultimately makes us better sculptors in whatever medium we choose to specialize in."
He has lectured and taught the importance of stone carving and figurative sculpture at the institutions including the Prince of Wales Institute, London, Bath Academy of Art, UK, the Academy of Art University, San Francisco and the Crucible, Oakland CA. Many of his private students at his studio went on to make a successful career in sculpture and stonework.
Barry attended Stafford College of Art and Design and Bath Academy of Art and travelled widely in Europe and the Middle East, studying sculptural techniques both ancient and modern. But he credits the long apprenticeships that he served in the quarries, stone processing yards, and sculpture casting foundries of England, and the later experience of running his own stone company, as the places where he truly learned his craft.
